Santiago Lago-Peñas co-edits Special Issue on Asymmetric Decentralization in The Annals of Regional Science
Santiago Lago-Peñas is one of the editors of the new Special Issue “Asymmetric Federalism: The Perils and Advantages of Asymmetric Decentralization Arrangements,” published in The Annals of Regional Science.
The Special Issue brings together research presented at the IDEAGOV International Conference on “Asymmetric Federalism: The Perils and Advantages of Asymmetric Decentralization Arrangements,” held in Santiago de Compostela on November 5–6, 2025, which Lago-Peñas co-organized as part of the activities of IDEAGOV.
Together with Ignacio Lago (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), Jorge Martinez-Vazquez (Georgia State University) and Agnese Sacchi (University of Urbino), Lago-Peñas edited a collection of comparative and interdisciplinary contributions examining how asymmetric decentralization affects territorial inequalities, fiscal outcomes, regional performance, political competition and governance.
The contributions cover a diverse range of contexts, including Spain, France, Italy and South Africa, providing new empirical evidence on the opportunities and challenges associated with differentiated governance arrangements.
The publication of the Special Issue represents one of the main academic outcomes of the IDEAGOV conference and contributes to the international debate on federalism, decentralization and territorial governance.
